Bumper vs Carfax: Pay Monthly or Pay Once?
Bumper is a subscription vehicle history service. We sell single reports. If you are checking one car before you buy it, that structural difference matters more than anything in the reports themselves.

The subscription trap on a one-time purchase
Most people looking up a VIN are buying one car. They need one report, once. A subscription is built for the opposite pattern — repeated use over months — and it keeps charging whether you use it or not.
The common complaint with any subscription vehicle service is not the product, it is the second month. People sign up for a low introductory charge, check the car, buy it or walk away, and then forget. The billing does not forget. If you go the subscription route with any provider, set a calendar reminder to cancel the same day you sign up.
What each report actually contains
Bumper aggregates from public and commercial sources and presents a broad profile of the vehicle, including things like market value estimates and ownership records.
Our reports are CARFAX data: accident records, title brands such as salvage, rebuilt and flood, odometer readings, ownership history and open recalls. It is narrower in scope and deeper on the specific question a buyer is asking — has this car been damaged, and has it been looked after.
Where a subscription genuinely wins
If you are a dealer, a flipper, or someone checking ten or more vehicles a month, unlimited lookups can work out cheaper per car than buying reports individually. That is a real use case and worth doing the arithmetic on.
For that pattern we sell packs instead — 8 reports for $25, or 25 for $59, which works out at $3.13 and $2.36 per report. The credits do not expire, so buying in bulk does not put you on a clock.
Which one should you choose?
Buying one car? A single $4.99 report costs less than one month of almost any subscription, and there is nothing to cancel afterwards.
Checking cars regularly? Compare a subscription's monthly cost against our packs. If you run fewer than about ten a month, the packs are usually cheaper and they carry over.
Either way, read the billing terms before you enter a card. That advice applies to us as much as anyone — the difference is that with a one-off payment there is no second month to read about.
Common questions
Is Bumper a subscription?
Yes — Bumper operates on a recurring subscription model. Check their current terms and cancellation policy on their own site before signing up.
Do I need an account to buy a report here?
No. You can pay and receive a report without registering first. An account is created for you automatically so you can view your reports later, and you set a password after purchase if you want dashboard access.
Do unused credits expire?
No. Credits from our multi-report packs stay on your account indefinitely, so buying a pack does not put you on a deadline.
Which is better for a dealer?
If you check very high volumes, compare a subscription against our Dealer Pack at $2.36 per report. We also offer an API for direct integration if you need reports inside your own system.
